Indra Puri Mosque

Indra Puri Mosque is the oldest mosque in Indonesia that is greatly influenced by Hindu architecture style. In 1874 A.D., this place was used to inaugurate Tuanku Muhammad Daud Syah as Sultan Alaiddin Muhammad Daud Syah.


At the golden age of Aceh Kingdom, Indra Puri had ever been the center for the royal administrative activities. Likewise, Indra Puri Mosque was once functioned as a center for Islamic teaching, educational, politic, economic, and social activities. The mosque has produced many Muslim religious leaders, intellectuals, and architects serving for the palace.
B. Distinctive Features

Before the Islamic invasion, precisely during the Hindu era, Indra Puri Mosque was a temple used by the Hindu people to practice Hindu praying activity. And during the tenure of Sultan Iskandar Muda, it was functionally changed into a mosque. The modification was intended to facilitate people, thus they would be good practicing Muslims.

Not only do the people recognize Indra Puri as a mosque, but likewise as a fortress. The mosque consists of two stairs and is underpinned by masonry wall. The wall looks not neat enough as it was made fro the mixture of lime and clay, as the glue.

Indra Puri Mosque lies in Indra Puri Sub-district, Aceh Besar District, Nangroe Aceh Darussalam Province, Indonesia. It is about 150 meters away from the Kreung Aceh River.
D. Access

The distance between the mosque and Banda Aceh, the capital of Nangroe Aceh Darussalam Province, is about 25 km northern. From Banda Aceh, you can take any mode of transport with approximately 30 minutes.
